Yikes!!! I've tried Ubuntu 9.10 and 10.4...
Both have serious issues on my computer with usability.

I understand their new direction, but it looks like I'm sticking with rock solid 9.04 for quite a while.

1 gig of ram max... EVGA (PCI) NVIDIA 6200 video card... Lite-ON CD/DVD read write combo unit.
The 250 watt power supply has caused me to unplug the Floppy disc and use only one hard drive for safety's sake.

The EMachines is very expandable.
A 300 watt power supply will take the EVGA video card with no need to upgrade.
Errr...YET.?
2 gigs of ram max (with an AMD Sempron possessor)
The Lite-On CD/DVD can be transfered.

Made the switch!
Future $$ upgrades:
AGP video card (DONE! EVGA NVIDIA 6200).

Replace 512 card with a 2nd 1024 card for a total of 2 gigs (DONE! Can you say "Give me WARP 10 Scotty!" ).

550 watt power supply (DONE! Ultra LSP 550W).

As "stable" as 8.04 was/is... There are some annoying bugs that detract from the using pleasure.

Soooo... Jaunty is now my GOLD OP and Karmic (9.10) is the new toy.
This should be fun to get in early and watch this one mature.

I wiped the original Seagate 60g clean and reinstalled Windows. (updated to SP3)


Ubuntu 8.04 Long Term Support (3yrs) is a BIG improvement from 7.04!
The Distros I've tried and found NOT to MY liking:
OpenSuse 11 Gnome - Fedora 9 Gnome - Xubuntu 8.04 Xfce - Kubuntu 8.04 KDE.
Linux Mint 5 gets a "Close but no cigar" rating. (Ubuntu 8.04 with the ANU package)

I'm going to wait a few days after it's release to see "problems" on the Ubuntu forums.
I could easily keep 7.04 if too many bugs are found in the initial release of 7.10.
As far as I can tell... 7.04 works flawlessly.

Finally, something that looked similar to what they show on the Website appeared.
But... It NEVER ran correctly! I might try it again at a latter date...

Update...
Successfully INSTALLED on an older computer.
One small hitch though... NO access to the internet!
I'll work on that part later. For now however, I can load and test my extensions!
And... Learn how Linux works.
BIG UPDATE!
I've added more memory to my computer in preparation for Linux.
Two 512 cards... 1024... YEEHA! Wow, things sped up considerably.

Successfully loaded Ubuntu on my computer using WUBI
So far... So good. More later.
WUBI is great for in depth testing of Ubuntu... but causes problems with the actual performance of Windows.

I've added a second Hard Drive to my Compaq (20GB) and loaded Ubuntu on it.
